3. Mothers’ Club in Development

The Mothers Club in Development grew out of a community-based organisation (CBO) and was established as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in 2009 in the predominantly Muslim area of Nima-Mamobi in Accra, Ghana. By 2012, the group had around 200 members, and continues to attract new members. Initially, the NGO carried out literacy activities and provided simple first aid training and health awareness training, for example on cholera and yellow fever and hygiene. Today, many of its activities focus on sanitation, health, human rights, sexual and reproductive health, women’s empowerment, developing skills and entrepreneurship, and community mobilisation for community-led interventions. As the Mothers Club in Development is the only sustained volunteer group in the community, international NGOs often approach it when looking for community involvement in their activities.

Their mission is to contribute to the creation of a Ghanaian society where women, young people, children and the underprivileged are empowered to realise their rights and respsonsibilities and act upon them to secure decent and sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families. They are a strong and well-respected mechanism for disseminating simple messages throughout the community.
